Top Time Tip #114 Manage Your Energy, Not Just Your Time
16th January 2008
I do hope you've had a lovely Christmas and New Year break, and may this coming year be an adventure for you, no matter what the economy brings.
Here in New Zealand we're having our second really fabulous summer in a row - long hot summer days and, at least in our region, enough rain to keep the pastures growing.
One of the things we all notice after a good break is the increase in a sense of well-being. I'm often asked for ideas on how to keep that feeling of vitality alive after the holiday has gone. If that's a topic you're also interested in, you'll enjoy the guest article featured as our lead story this week
Helping Students Reduce Their Stress And Manage Their Time ... ... And I wonder if you can help me with something. I had a call a couple of days ago from the mother of two late teens. 'Do you run public courses for senior high school and tertiary students on time management, Robyn?' The short answer was 'we haven't so far', but the longer answer is 'we have been thinking about doing something for students'.
What I'd love your feedback on is this: if we put on a course in the Auckland region for young adult students, would you or anyone you know in that age range be interested in attending? Just flick us a quick email with "Teenage Time Management" in the subject line and your contact details if you'd like to know more.
Manage Your Energy, Not Just Your Time
As I've travelled around the world extensively over the last few years I've noticed more and more people talking about energy management rather than just time management. Then, just before Christmas I came across an excellent article on the topic. I asked the author, Teya Skae, permission to reprint it for you. She's a Health and Life Coach, Kinesiologist and Nutritionist, based in Sydney, Australia.
Summary:
"Why is it that so many people are feeling tired, overwhelmed and unfulfilled in their ever increasingly busy lives? Or why do so many people crave more time and more energy?"
"It is because in our current fast paced western world, people are chasing deadlines, running out of time and crave more time in order to get things done.
Time and energy are so valuable that they are traded as commodities .... When you manage energy, you are, in fact, managing time.
"How can we maximise our performance and enjoyment in life?"
"The answer lies in the renewal of the four key sources of energy. Renewal of your energy is the most important idea to put into practice. Balancing energy is not so much about endurance, but rather, disengaging for short bursts of rest and recovery from everything. It's easy to grasp this idea when we see life as a series of sprints instead of a marathon to get somewhere.
"How can we put this idea into practice?"
"By introducing daily rituals or activities in the right amounts by finding time for rest, relaxation, fun and play, emotional connectedness, mental relaxation and spiritual realignment daily and in short bursts."
