Top Time Tip #123
Seize The Moment and LIVE!

7th July 2009

Campervan.jpg  That campervan holiday I told you about last issue - well, the jury's in .  Unanimous verdict - we're not campervanners!

We'll be dining out on our selection of stories for a year or two but the  matter was clinched when the heater stopped working on the coldest night in the coldest snap this winter, on the very night we decided to freedom park beside a Hastings beach.

aahh.jpgWe were in bed by 7pm to try and keep warm, so cold it was painful to even have hands out above the blankets to read a book. Mike woke to condensation dripping off the ceiling above his head, scrambled emphatically down the ladder and announced in very unequivocal terms, 'That's it. We're going home.' (Actually, he said a few other things too - not suitable for a family publication!) I didn't argue, I promise you!

Those of you who love being squashed up in a tinny box on wheels with everything packed down tightly every time you move - I admire you! Now where's that hotel guide?

This week I'm in licensing mode, running a Train the Trainer programme for one of Auckland's large employers. They've taken on licenses for two of our Productivity Training Modules, 'Getting A Grip On Time' and 'Getting A Grip On Email and Information Overload'. (Great way to reduce your training costs if you've got a Training Department.)

Case Study:  Seize The Moment and LIVE!

LaVonn Steiner, my co-author in 'Getting a Grip on Leadership' forwarded this thought-provoking piece a few weeks ago. She doesn't know the source so apologies to the unknown author (or authors) for not being able to give due credit.

"Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven't thought about it, don't have it on their schedule, didn't know it was coming or are too rigid to depart from their routine.

I got to thinking one day about all those women on the Titanic who passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to 'cut back the calories'. From then on, I've tried to be a little more flexible!!

How many women out there will eat at home because their husband didn't suggest going out to dinner until after something had been thawed? Does the word 'refrigeration' mean nothing to you?

How often have your kids dropped in to talk and sat in silence while you watched 'Who wants to be a millionaire' on television?

I cannot count the times I called my sister and said, 'How about going to lunch in a half hour?' She would stammer, 'I can't. I have clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known yesterday. I had a late breakfast. It looks like rain.' And my personal favourite: 'It's Monday.' She died a few years ago. We never did have lunch together.

Because we cram so much into our lives, we tend to even schedule our headaches. We live on a sparse diet of promises we make to ourselves when all the conditions are perfect!

  • We'll go back and visit the grandparents when we get Steve toilet-trained.
  • We'll entertain when we replace the living-room carpet.
  • We'll go on a second honeymoon when we get two more kids out of college.

Life has a way of accelerating as we get older. The days get shorter and the list of promises to ourselves gets longer. One morning we awaken and all we have to show for our lives is a litany of 'I'm going to,' 'I plan on,' and 'someday, when things are settled down a bit.'

I have a 'seize the moment' friend. When anyone calls she is open to adventure and available for trips. She keeps an open mind on new ideas. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. You talk with her for five minutes and you're ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of roller blades and skip an elevator for a bungee cord.

Have you ever:

Watched kids playing on a merry go round?      merry-go-round.jpg

rain.jpg     Listened to the rain lapping on the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly's eratic flight?     Butterfly.jpg

Sunset.jpg     Gazed at the sun into the fading light?

Do you run through each day on the fly?

When you ask 'How are you?' do you hear the reply?

When the day is done, do you lie in your bed with the next hundred chores running through your head?

Ever told your child 'we'll do it tomorrow'? And in your haste, not seen his sorrow?

Ever lost touch? Let a good friendship die?

When you worry and hurry through your day it is like an unopened gift....thrown away.

Life is not a race. Take it slower... Hear the music before the song is over. Do something you WANT to......not something on your SHOULD DO list.

'Life may not be the party we hoped for... but while we are here, we might as well dance!'

How To Make You Business Worth Millions!

Once every few years I come across a business growth idea that is so effective I feel compelled to share it with my clients and colleagues.

Recently I experienced a 60 minute on-line seminar entitled "Make It a Million More" and I was so impressed that I've arranged to sponsor the same event exclusively for my clients so that you can attend for zero fee.

Keeping Life Real Seminars - The 3 Divas Team Up Again

Rotorua 4th August;      Auckland 11th August;     Whangarei 22nd September

You might remember that my friends Yvonne Godfrey and Allie Mooney have joined with me twice already in the last nine months with a 3-hour action packed seminar. The first two were in Auckland and Wellington. Both were received with great enthusiasm and we had many requests to take the event further afield. Finally we've had a chance to get some more dates squared away (you should see us trying to coordinate our busy schedules - NOT easy!).

Yvonne - Leadership. She'll inspire and equip you with clarity and confidence to achieve your business and personal goals.

Allison - People Skills. Allie's unique fun and entertaining delivery style will have you both laughing and challenged as she shares a powerful tool that will transform any relationship.

Robyn - Time & Self Management. I'll help you stand out from your competitors by being more productive and valuable - absolutely vital in these economic times.

  • Our major purpose with these events is not about making money for us, but rather to make our message affordable for a wider audience. Hence the price of only $45 per ticket.
  • We also want to take it to places that don't normally get this kind of event (and we've got other towns on our list.)
  • And there's a third factor - we're donating $5 from every ticket to the local Hospice of each town.

To find out more and to book your ticket go to http://www.3divas.co.nz/ And please do pass this information on to others who'd want to know.
